How many views does it take to make money on youtube

How Many Views Does it Take to Make Money on YouTube?

How many views does it take to make money on YouTube?  This is a common question asked and it really depends on who you ask.  You may have heard that you’ll make one dollar per thousand views or that it’s $1,000 per Million Views.  Some say it’s $5 per thousand views.  Well, we’re asking the wrong question.  We should be asking, “How much ENGAGEMENT does it take to make money on YouTube?”

Lifetime Monthly Views Vs Earnings

You don’t make money based on the amount of views you have.  You make money based on people’s engagement with the ad.  Engagement here means clicking or watching a ad for more than 30 seconds.  YouTube Advertising is managed in the Adwords platform. Advertisers choose ads on a Cost Per Click (CPC) or Cost Per View (CPV) model.

Types of Ads

Cost Per Click (CPC)
CPC is when an advertiser pays money based on clicks.  So if a certain keyword has a CPC of $3 and someone clicks on that ad, it will charge that advertiser $3. These text ads pop up in the lower part of the screen during the video and can also show up as a square banner on the right side of your channel.

Cost Per View (CPV)
CPV is when an advertiser pays money based on views.  A view for the advertiser means someone watches an Ad for at least 30 seconds or half of the ad; whichever comes first.  That person could click that ad 50 times but it still wouldn’t charge the advertiser more because they’re not paying for the click, they’re paying for the view.

Ads on my Channel

TrueView: Pre-Roll, In-Search & In-Display Ads

Pre-Roll Ads are the ads that act as a preview before the video starts and viewers can skip it after 5 seconds.

In-Search Ads show up in the search results and are surrounded by a light yellow box.

In-Display Ads show up on the right side of YouTube in the suggested video area

*  There are also third party pre-roll ads that force users to watch for a certain amount of time.  Since these forced don’t apply to the majority I’m leaving them out.

My First Check From Google

Where Attentions Go, Ads Will Flow

Advertisers only pay when someone clicks an ad or watches for 30 seconds.  This is why you can’t tie your channel views to dollars.  If your video gets ten million views but nobody watches or click the ads, you don’t make any money.  This is how I’m able to make $1 per 25 views.  Advertisers pay big money to get their ad in front of specific and targeted audience.

One of my YouTube Channels happens to provide valuable video content for this specific audience.  This channel teaches business owner how to organize their finances, track their expenses and save money on taxes.  Any company who is trying to reach business owners would love to place their ads on my channel because we both share the same demographic.  The people who view my channel are their potential customers.

How Can You Make More Money on Your YouTube Channel?

There are a couple of easy steps that you can implement right now that will make you more money per view.  The first thing you need to do is…

1.  Take a Sniper Approach

Advertisers want targeted YouTube channels with a defined demographic.  They’d much rather place their ads on a specific type of person than a random user.  Think of this as a narrow sniper approach vs the wide spray of a shotgun.

Make your videos with a specific type of person in mind.  This is basic advertising 101; identifying your target demographic.  Don’t tell me that your demographics are 21 – 55 year old women.  This is the shotgun approach that’s too general and vague.  Do you talk to a 21 year old girl the same way you’d talk to a 55 year old lady?  Of course not.  Define your audience and create videos that’s catered to them.

2.  Target KeyWords with a High CPC

Understand this, Certain KeyWords Pay More than Others.  Advertisers will pay more for the keyword, “home mortgage” (CPC $17.63) than “cheap phone cases” (CPC $1.38) because the end return is a lot higher.  If someone ends up closing on a home loan that could make them upwards of $5,000+, whereas the end return on a cheap phone case would only be $15.  Would you rather get paid from a phone case video that gets a million views with a CTR of 0.01% or a home mortgage video that only gets 10,000 views with a CTR of 0.08% ?  Consider the scenarios below with the given keywords and their cost per clicks.

mortgage vs cases

Scenario 1 You make a video reviewing the new iPhone that gets 1,000,000 views, of which your ad Click Through Rate (CTR) is 0.1%.  Meaning 1,000 people clicked the ad.  If the CPC is $1.38 the total advertising dollars made would be $1,380.  Google keeps around 45% making your payout $759.  This gives you $1 per 1,317 views

Scenario 2 You make a video teaching people about home loans that gets 10,000 views, of which your ad Click Through Rate (CTR) is 0.8%.  Meaning 80 people clicked the ad.  If the CPC is $17.63 the total advertising dollars the total advertising made would be $1,410.  Google keeps around 45% leaving your payout $776.  This gives you about $1 per 13 views.

These scenarios are exaggerated to show the point.  The money you make on YouTube has more to do with what advertisers pay for than how many views you get.

This knowledge is essential is to make the most amount of money per view.  If you have a very targeted niche that contains high CPC keywords, you don’t need millions of views to make money.  Getting a couple hundred views a day could bring in a couple hundred bucks a month!

3. Massive Video Production Strategy

One of the biggest complaints I hear about video is that it’s so time consuming.  It takes forever just to make one video.  I’ve found a solution.  I call it the, “Massive Video Production Strategy”  This allows you to make the most amount of videos in the least amount of time and work.  By using this strategy, I was able to shoot, edit, upload and optimize 30 videos in 9 hours.

There’s a very specific template to follow when creating a YouTube Channel for the purpose of maximizing engagement and making money.  This template requires some creative thinking and a little bit of work.  Luckily this process is easily repeatable and taught in this video course ebook.  If you’re interested check out our step-by-step Video Course How To Make $1 A Day On YouTube

No, it depends on the type of ad you’re using. CPC ( cost per click) is you get paid when someone interacts, CPV (cost per view), is when you get paid for when someone watches the whole ad.

So does one not make money from someone watching the full length or at least 30 seconds of the ad or does the viewer actually have to click the ad for you to earn money?

        Hey messopotamia,

First of all, that’s not even your video to make money off of. It looks like that’s a video ripped off of the New York Times. Secondly, the blog post above talks about how it doesn’t matter how many views you have because you get paid based off of engagement. In the world of YouTube 4,100 views isn’t that many.

        1. messopotamia

thanks bro …but that video is not copy right that video is free they update me today 2 dollar .. my earn was before 7 days because monetize details will update every 7 days ..you are right 4100 view is not many in youtube world 🙂 but i great account before 2 week and i am very amateur 🙂

Did you not read at all? Earning money on youtube depends on the ads that people watch, not how many views you have.

    2. AB

Read the article: It’s not paid per view, it’s paid for the number of clicks on the ad or views of the actual ad (which you can’t count). Good luck to you!

      1. Aaron Neal

tomlgfouremom …so with that logic, you’re saying that roughly ONLY 319 people in the US have become rich by messing with youtube in some way? You really are a certain kind of special aren’t you. The top 1000 hell maybe even 10,000 or more youtube account holders are what most people would consider rich in some part due to youtube…so please tell me where you get your low standards from. Don’t believe BS that people tell you, especially when it’s negative, if someone says it can’t be done, it only means it can’t be done in THEIR mind, doesn’t mean it’s impossible, or even close to impossible. If you love something, go for it, jump, and maybe you might land on the other side…regardless if you do or not, there’s no loss. You either die doing what you loved for most of your life, or you died rich doing what you love….so screw the negativity!

    1. YouTuberH

No you can’t you will get copy right infringement and they can drag you to court unless you have their written permission. Don’t pirate other’s videos. Make some funny videos with your friends of of your interest or makeup or cooking, you will surely get audience. Those kind of vids are most popular on youtube, you can do it and you will get success. Best of Luck.

    Hi Jake,

I have a YouTube channel and till now I have uploaded 40 videos.

They are not live videos but some text with photos about mobile apps. Most of the videos have less than 50 view.

I am in India and from analytics, 33% views is from US. For every click I am getting $0.01. I have got $0.64 till now.

Do you know why it’s $0.01 for each click. Is there any chance of becoming $1 per click?

    Thanks.

I do not recommend working with YouTube. You will work on YouTube 2-3 years and at one point you to block spam for some reason or some other garbage and remove all your videos, and the money itself zagrebut. You can then bang your head against the wall, and the account is unlocked. So think 100 times before wasting your time and money on the YouTube channel. YouTube in the past. I do not recommend working with affiliate.

    1. ivey casey

If your videos are not on first page of YouTube when a user search by something; your video will be lost in the sea. Keep in mind while planning to make money on YouTube.

I was just wondering, do you still get paid for watching your own vids and clicking on the ads yourselves? If this were true, couldn’t you make a living off of watching your own vids over and over again, while always clicking on the ads?

    1. Cath

Youtube will ban you from monetizing if you try to watch your own videos for profit. The EULA claims they will know, and you cannot do this.

      1. justme

so what’s to keep from having friends click on your videos and ads, while you click on theirs, and you both making money. there is no connection between your video channel and someone elses internet IP

        1. Dan VPM

Even if YouTube did allow that to work (which they would catch onto pretty quick when they saw tons of clicks from the same people on the same videos) it wouldn’t really be worth it.

Say you get 10 of your friends to agree to click your ads all day (which would be the absolute worst job in the world). First of all, ads don’t even show up every time you watch a video. It might take 5-10+ times clicking on a video to get an ad to show up. Next, in order to get paid, viewers have to watch at least :30 of the ad before clicking on it. Once someone does click, it’s only worth a few cents. At that rate, even with 10 of your friends doing that, you’re not even going to make minimum wage.

The real money comes when you create good videos that people actually want to watch and you have hundreds or thousands of people clicking these ads at all hours of the day. Then you and your friends can get real jobs AND be making money on the side from other people clicking your ads.

Very Well Explainde bro!!! Thanking You 🙂 🙂
But I have a small doubt How keywords are helpul and where to use it youtube monetization bro???
I need some clear explaination ????????

    1. Dan VPM

Rasheed keywords are everything! Here’s a quick explanation for you: Say you’ve got a great video about funny things to do on a hoverboard. If you upload that video with no keywords and the title “pic0293.mov” Google is going to have no clue what that video is about so no one will ever find it unless they search for “pic0293.mov” (which I doubt has ever been searched once on YouTube. But if you do some research and upload you video titled “5 Funny Things To Do On Your Hoverboard” and use keywords like “hoverboard” “funny video” “best hoverboard videos” “[insert some brands of hoverboards]” “best hoverboard” “hoverboard handstand” etc. and also put those keywords in your video description, Google will know exactly what your video is about and will be able to show your video to anyone who searches those things.

  36. catz

so that means that no matter how many views, you tube will still pay based on the numbers of clicks on the ads right? but a lot of people does not want to click or watch the ads like me.. i always avoid the ads and close it and just watch the video..

    1. Dan | VPM Admin

Every video has it’s own strategy so I don’t want to say yes or no to that.

Keep in mind though that TrueView is a Cost Per View model where the advertiser is charged if the viewer watches either half the ad or longer than 30 seconds, whichever comes first. That means if you use a 26 second ad, you only have 13 seconds for the viewer to either skip or click before you pay.

    2. Tyelyn Christian

Yes it is to short because when posting a video on the magical site of youtube people want to be captured into the essence of your video and if its to short it’s crappy just saying.

  59. logic bro

U r saying that youtobers make money by ads right, iam using Adblock, witch blocks all ads from any website, this app is very popular to the Chrome users on pc/mac. So if u have Adblock and u watch a youtube video with out the ad popping up, does the youtuber make money then ?????

    1. hines

They are not making money from anyone using adblock cause the ad isn’t being served. A lot of people know that its bad to use adblock. If everyone used adblock it would break the internet. I don’t use adblock, I want the youtubers I enjoy watching to be able to make money and create more awsome videos to enjoy

    2. Jennifer

Haha don’t bother, you can’t spell. “Which” means you can’t run a channel…. Lol. And as blockers do not work. The ads aren’t “pop ups” which is what those blocking apps target. The ads are incorporated into the beginning of the video. Your computer doesn’t reco that it’s a “separate” (but actually attached) video….

      1. Jason Bell

        Jennifer –
Ad block software does, in fact, block ads before and after videos. It blocks them on the side bar as well. It will even act as a proxy for tablets and phones to block in-game ads. So, this does really present a problem for YouTubers and others who make money from their content through ads. I used to use them, and I still do outside of youtube to keep malware and annoying ads from pushing themselves into my face. Some of these ads can be malicious.

      2. DuckDuckGoose

Jennifer you can’t spell either, ‘ads’ and ‘recognize’ … “Which” means according to you, you’d better pass on running a channel as well.

To be perfectly honest, I wouldn’t mind the ads if not for risk of getting malware. Other than that, Adblock is awesome.

  60. Anshul

Though I am not a video maker or editor but I would love to produce some game replays and also edit them , so how can I find relevant ads for this particular niche.
It won’t do any good if it has a baby care ad in violent 18+ game video.

      1. Joe Van Winkle

I would like to learn more about how you got to your answer on how to make money. I want to know how many views it takes to money.

    1. NextGamingInc

You can and possible will get your account banned on youtube, and forfeit your revenue. Because it is the same with views youtube gets the views with a base of your ip address and if it pops up multiple times… Well you know the rest you are better off just letting it slowly increase as you make multiple videos to gain more views as youtube highlights active youtubers also so yeah. Hope that helps man.

      1. Mike Gerwitz

is it based on YouTube account or on ip address? cause’ if i want to view my own videos on youtube will i get my account taken down? or is it for a ridiculous amount only?

        thanks man

  61. Ireallydontknow

Been reading all these comments and must say some people are quiteeee funny… Either way Thanks for the info I definitely know more now than I did this morning when I was startomg up my channel.

    1. PleaseJustReadThis

Most people here want to start up their own channels and you’d think that If they actually wanted to be successful that they would not be so touched by these comments and replies that they are getting from other people… well If you expect to get a big community who keeps coming back, replying with hatemail isn’t the correct way to do so, time to grow up and take these whiney little comments like a man I’d say.

  62. Deepi

    Hello,
Thank you very much for this informative post. this helps me a lot , now my doubts are cleared. you explained very well. keep posting useful stuff like this. Good job.

  63. anon

The whole point of this is while you guys are arguing people on youtube ARE making money, whether it be a lot or a little. This guy has figured out how to get the most ad clicks/watches without having to make some dumb video to get 1 million views. If the ad correlates to the video he’s going to get more ad clicks than someone who made a frozen parody that has an ad about car insurance.

  64. WildKarrde

Wow, I’ve got a couple thousand more views than the example above, three times as many minutes watched… and about 8% of the payout. I thought I was doing ok before I saw this, lol.

The reason I looked up this article (and articles like it) was that I was blown away by the fact that I have a video with 2270 views that’s made $4.22, and a video I literally juuust uploaded that has 14 views, and has made $3.08.

That video made me realize just how much money I’m leaving on the table with the amount of views I get per month… but even after reading this article, I don’t fully understand how I could optimize my video’s (about 98% video game replays) to make more than they currently do.

    1. VPM Admin

The key is how relevant your video is to the ads placed on it. Keep in mind, you get paid based on how many people click/watch the ads on your video not based on how many people watch your video.

Advertisers place their ads on videos based on what keywords you’re using (In tags, title, description). One of your videos is most likely just optimized better than the other.

  65. Ali

hi i am ali from Pakistan i am start work just 2 mounts before on you tube my earning 120$ how i can do my video more view and more earning i want 500$ every m

            Sinani-

It’s just to teach you the concept of how to start making money on YouTube. Once you learn how, you can duplicate what you have done to make even more.

  66. Kyle

Don’t waste your money on this book. The author is not makeing any money on YouTube. He might be making $200-$300 per month but nothing substantial. He is trying to sale books to make money. He would have poates a check showing how much he had made if he was legit. Plus, I can’t find many videos of his on YouTube? Anyone can learn this stuff by surfing the Web. It’s called GOOGLE…

    1. Joe

Hey Kyle, it would help your point out so much more if you knew grammar, sentence structure, and well, the English language in general.

  67. Bob

I read the book and have now made $32,87,650 in just a year. IT REALLY WORKS !!! I am now the owner of a seaside villa in Spain, can you believe it !!! You can do it too. JUST BUY THE BOOK and find out how it feels to be a millionaire. Kudos to the author.

    1. curiosity

how did you do it i have youtube channel but i want it to be better i wanna have more money so i can go to a good college so please tell me i also luv making gaming videos so please give me some advice

  68. I'm Me

Kudos to whoever wrote the article. I forgot who wrote after reading these idiotic comments. For all of you a-holes jumping on the author, how about you go and prove him wrong and make money YOUR way on YouTube? Let me know how that works out for you….

Author – I get your point, and you are right. The fact of the matter is, these jerks that are commenting were looking for you to give them some sort of secret to making big money on YouTube. There is no secret. Make a good video that people care about, make sure it stands out from the other 1,000 videos just like yours, and promote it. You’re either going to do it well, or you are going to suck at it.

    1. a person

It’s amazing how many people I know starting you tube channels and expecting to upload two-five videos a day thinking the many views are what’s going to be making them money, just like the rest of the people here lead by fulse information thinking the more views the more money. They think there’s only one way things are done and when they find out it’s not what they thought they take it out on the person trying to help.

    1. Jake

What specifically do you find wrong? Everything on this post is backed up by the link you shared. So if anything, it just confirms this post to be right. Also, this site give people a very general and vague overview on how to make money. The video course we provide gives specific strategies and steps needed to make more money from your YouTube channel.

If you’d like more evidence that this strategy actually works you can see the results from this high school teacher who applied what we taught in the course- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ACuiSFOlFk&list=UUb2CfSqGui2eibRgAioAQwA#t=324

There’s many ways to make money on YouTube, the course we provide is a proven and tested strategy that actually works if it’s implemented.

I do not know who you are but certainly you are going to a famous

What key points I could incorporate in my videos to increase my views? Looking for a formula to work I could stick too.

  71. start online business

Very nice post. I just stumbled upon your
weblog and wished to say that I have truly enjoyed surfing around your blog posts.
After all I’ll be subscribing to your rss feed and I hope you write again soon!

  72. Jake

Based on the comments I see there’s a lot of people missing the entire point of the Article. This post was not written to teach you math, it was written to show you how you can make more money on YouTube. Even if my math formula was 1+1=5, it still doesn’t change the fact that you get paid based on the engagement of the ad, NOT how many views you have.

Would love to see some discussion and comments about your experience making money on YouTube. Do you guys agree or disagree with the overall point of this post?

    1. Alex

I do agree, but views still matters you cant get money ”fast” if you get for exaple 10-20 views per month (just a example)

    2. Anonymous

lol. you say at the top that views dont give you money. you also say that you only make money with peoples engagement with the ad…that is incorrect. people don’t need to engage with it at all to make money, if they click on it then yes they will pay more. however you get paid for every 1000 views with an ad on the video. for me…..every 3000 views about 1000 of them are
monitized. the pay for that changes from time to time but usually its around $4-$7 dollars. this is coming from a youtuber who is in the top 30 in terms of views and subscribers. stop writing someone you obviously no not much about

      1. Anonymous

How does google pay you? I mean check comes to ur place or like they teansfer online to the account number which u give..

        1. Anonymous

yeh top 30 ? lol that difficult to understand? my friend has over 8 million subscribers and over 1 billion views. obviously not going to mention them for obvious reasons. your cpm will be low if you don’t have a lot of engagement with your videos…. so the more likes and comments then the higher your cpm will be. so if you only got 0.04 then your videos obviously suck.

    3. VeNoM

I was honestly looking for a little more from the article. If I make a video with 1 million views, and you have a video with 1,000 views, its possible that you made more money than I did… but not very likely. If you looked at a large sample of data, you could definitely find, ON AVERAGE, the amount of money made per view. If there is a relationship between number of views and number of engagements (which there is), then there must exist a relationship between views and money made.

    1. Anonymous

He said $1,410, not $14,000. Next time try and actually read what was said before you post a comment and make yourself look stupid!

  73. Attah Best

A man’s every day toil is all about taking risk in the right direction, Why not try this out and see if all that they have say Is true………..,!!

  74. Anonymous

Listen guys, everyone has a different experience with YouTube and Adsense. The best way to see how much you’ll make is to try it out for yourself. But I can tell you, I’m a full time college student who pays all his bills from Adsense money. It is possible to live off of. Just make your videos about popular topics, i.e. Parodys, movie reviews, fan films, etc.

  75. Brian

I bet I could make money stating the open mind an facts that everyone needs to know witch is seeing the hole picture letting one know the missed concept of making money

    1. Anonymous

Maybe you should learn some English grammar and the importance of stringing a sentence together before embarking on your YouTube quest..

  76. Brian

The point of this is how your making money so stop arguing about the facts of YouTube making money by ads. That’s how it works an if you wanna waist time so do so but in the mean time YouTube making money regardless of your option. There letting you know how the money flow works an that’s all there is to it, straight facks.

    1. D-Train

Damn dude, you can’t even write like a halfway intelligent person, just STFU already until you pass 5th grade English grammar. “waist” time? your “option”? “facks”? what a f***ing idiot!

  77. Bob

Seems that education has really deteriorated in this part of the world.

Better ask a 5-year old East Asian and s/he can instantly tell you that 0.08% is equivalent to 0.0008.

      1. Anonymous

Actually, I don’t think that you know math! You shouldn’t call people “dumbass” when you can clearly tell that it’s not equivalent. 8 is a whole number, 0.08% is a decimal percentage.

      2. D-Train

I love it when dumbasses call someone else a dumbass and go on to prove that THEY are the ones that are the dumbass. Priceless!

    1. Anonymous

Everyone, the math that the author did was correct. Quit incorrectly reading what he wrote.
First of all, he wrote 0.1% and 0.8%, he DID NOT write 0.01%, 0.08%, 0.008% etc etc etc.
Second.0.8% is equivalent to 0.008 and 0.1% is equivalent to 0.01 (to turn a percent into a decimal you divide that percent by one hundred). He said for the 0.8% section that there were 10000 total views. 10000*0.008=80. This means that for every ten thousand views, 80 people clicked on the ad. For the 0.1% section, he said that there were 1000000 views. 1000000*0.001=1000. This means that for every million views, 1000 people clicked on the ad.
Everything the author did math wise was correct. For you people who you keep on reading it incorrectly, I advise you to stop blaming the author for doing something wrong just because you did not take the time to read what they actually said. For you people who keep getting the math wrong, if you do not remember how to do this kind of math, then do not blurt out what you think the correct answer is. Do not try arguing something you know nothing about.
      There, I’ve ended my rant.

    2. Hawa

Or ANY child, teen, or adult that is well-versed in math? Not sure why you pinpoint on East Asians. That’s very ignorant. Not surprised though.

Does .001% not equal to .00001? Is that what Click thru rates mean because everyone’s explanations are confusing me. To me .001% means .00001 hence when multiplied by 1 million you would get 10.

      1. D-Train

Yeah you bunch of nerds! How dare you say something that is correct? Don’t you realize that you are supposed to say something really stupid, then call everyone else stupid? That’s the point of making comments right? To prove how much of a f-ing idiot you are?

I think the 13 year olds on here that have repeated the 6th grade 3 times are numerous.

One of the biggest misunderstandings of the
home based business industry is whether it’s pissible too work at home forr free without investing any kind of money.
This could be your paychecks or maybe money that people owe you.
This is a strategy that successful affiliate marketers are using to make a loot of money
every month as an affiliatee marketer.

    1. Anonymous

No, that math is right. It is his 0.01 * 1,000,000 that is incorrect. It would be 10,000, not 100. Let’s just agree on the fact that this is garbage because the math is screwed regardless 🙂

          1. Anonymous

            1,000 * .08 = .01% * 800,000

Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter.
So Pi * 1,265,432 is not the same as .0000001%
